Tasmania Police alleged the youth, armed with a small pistol, entered Eastside Village Newsagency about 6.40am and made demands for cash and cigarettes.
Police said a small amount of cash and cigarettes was taken, and the shopkeeper was not injured from the incident.
Police apprehended the teen, of Youngtown, about 1pm on Monday. He was taken into custody.
Detective Inspector John King said CCTV footage of the incident helped police in their investigations.
“It really makes a difference, particularly in these types of investigations,” he said.
“A lot of businesses have CCTV, but it is ageing, so the quality is not always there to help us.
“In this instance, the store had a newer system, which really assisted us a great deal.”
The youth was due to appear in an out of hours court session on Monday night.
Inspector King said there was no cause for concern within the community.
“We have had instances of robbery within the community, but no one region is over-represented,” Inspector King said.
“There is no need for the community to feel fear.”
Tasmania Police has described people in the Launceston area as otherwise “well behaved” throughout New Year’s Eve.
There were with no problems reported throughout events, venues or campsites, and no related arrests made.
