Though the displays might not be as big and flashy as those in larger cities, New Year’s Eve events across Tasmania have a close-knit community feel that can’t be beaten.
Northern Tasmania
Royal Eve
Launceston’s official New Year’s Eve event is back again this year, and is set to be fun for all ages. Royal Eve will not only have twilight and midnight firework displays, but a wide selection of Tasmanian food, beer and wine, incredible waterfront views of the Tamar River, and a free kids’ zone.
Entertainment will be provided by a range of acts, including Tasmanian band The Wolfe Brothers, the evening’s MC Tommy Franklin, the Bad Dad Orchestra, and up-and-coming alternative R&B duo Sumner.
Tickets can be purchased online at royaleve.com.au, or at the Launceston Visitor Information Centre. Children under 12 can enter for free.
Country Club
The glitz, glamour, and fun of Las Vegas is heading to the Country Club on New Year’s Eve for its annual celebration. There will be live entertainment during the evening from Funktional, Sonic Boom, Rino Morea, and DJ Stirlo on the new rooftop bar.
Acting general manager Ross Hannah said the weather was set to be beautiful for the event. The fireworks display will begin at midnight.
Penny Royal
The New Year’s Eve celebrations at Penny Royal include good food, wine, and a fantastic view of the fireworks. Revellers can enjoy a three course meal with sparkling wine, listen to live entertainment while enjoying a platter and cocktail, or head to Brady’s Tavern for woodfired pizza and craft beer with live music. To book, head online or call 6332 1000. Fireworks can be viewed from the cliffs, and the rides will stay open until 9pm.
Carrick Park Pacing Club meeting
The Carrick Pacing Club is holding a meeting on New Year’s Eve, with events such as a 10-race pacing program, a horsemanship display by Geoff Harvey, and a parade by champion pacer Destreos.
Free children’s activities such as face painting and a jumping castle will be big hits, alongside a colouring competition with two children’s bikes to be won. There will be full bar facilities, a BBQ, and a kiosk. Gates open at 3pm, with admission $5 for adults, $3 for pensioners, and free for children under 16.
Events in North-West Tasmania
Glow in the Park
If you’re bringing in the new year in Devonport, head along to Roundhouse Park.
Get into the glow theme by wearing a neon outfit, and writing on the graffiti wall.
There will be fun for young and old, with a silent disco, carnival rides and other activities for children, and a fireworks display at both 9.30pm and midnight.
There will also be live entertainment from NEON and other Tasmanian talent.
Entry is free, and food and beverages will be available to purchase.
A Night on the Terrace at Burnie
Kicking off at 5.30pm, the community of Burnie is in for a super time at this year’s New Year’s Eve celebrations.
Slip on your favorite superhero costume and pay just $2 entry for front row seats to the Burnie Bay Criterium, where bands Cooltrain, Nine Lives, and Sugartrain will provide live entertainment, alongside children’s activities, a beach bonfire, and fireworks displays at 9.30pm and midnight.
The Bat Bar will open for drinks, run by the City of Burnie Brass Band, the Burnie Lions Club, and the Somerset Surf Lifesaving Club. All proceeds from the bar will also go to these clubs.
Those who are best dressed in a superhero costume could be in the running to win some great prizes, such as a trip to Movieworld.
Events in Southern Tasmania
Taste of Tasmania
Hobart’s biggest New Year’s Eve party is back again to celebrate the beginning of the new year.
Though the Taste of Tasmania festival begins on December 28 and is free to enter until it ends on January 3, on New Year’s Eve the site will only be open to those with a ticket past 6pm, with the theme of A Midsummer Night’s Eve.
There’s a great music line-up, with acts such as The Whitlams and Monique Brumby providing entertainment.
Those attending will also be able to experience some of the best food, wine, cider, and beer that the state has to offer, with all stalls at the festival set to be open to serve up delicious food and drinks.
Fireworks will go off at 9.30pm, and again at midnight.
Falls Music and Arts Festival
One of the biggest new year’s celebrations for lovers of music across the country, the Tasmanian leg of of the Falls Music and Arts Festival kicked off on December 29 at Marion Bay.
The festival is also taking place at Lorne in Victoria, Byron Bay in New South Wales, and Fremantle in Western Australia.
Punters will ring in the new year with big name acts such as Foster the People, Daryl Braithwaite, Liam Gallagher, Flume, and The Kooks, with energetic Canberra electronic duo Peking Duk set to count down the seconds to 2018 during their much anticipated set at the Marion Bay site.
