All alderman present at Monday’s meeting voted in favour of keeping the design as it is, with no other appropriate location identified. 

City of Launceston general manager Michael Stretton said the extra consultation had not indicated any strong public support for a change in location for the proposed amenity block, which would be constructed between Macquarie House, the fountain pond and Charles Street.

“As people will be aware, Civic Square's existing public toilet facilities, housed beneath Macquarie House, will be demolished as part of that building's $4 million redevelopment into a technology and innovation hub, and in any case are due for replacement,” he said.

“They no longer meet contemporary standards, and have no disabled access.”

“With a major redevelopment of Civic Square underway, this is a most opportune time to examine the issue.”
