On Monday the Road Safety Advisory Council launched the We’ve Been Everywhere campaign, aimed at promoting the high probability of being caught by police if driving unsafely. 

It comes ahead of Tasmania Police’s Operation Crossroads, which will operate from December 22 to January 1. 

During last year’s Christmas period, there was zero fatalities and five serious injuries on Tasmanian roads. 

Road Safety Advisory Council chairman Garry Bailey said people needed to consider how their actions on the road could affect other people. 

“Operation Crossroads is a way of keeping every Tasmanian safe, but police alone can’t do it,” Mr Bailey said. 

“It is the responsibility of every driver. 

“The critical figure is 250 Tasmanians have been badly injured on the roads in the past year. 

“The ripple effect of that is considerable. 

“It’s almost unquantifiable, the human impact this has.

“Road safety is everyone's responsibility.”

So far this year there have been 36 fatalities on Tasmanian roads, almost a third of which have involved motorcycles.  

Tasmania Police Assistant Commissioner Glenn Frame said the last thing police wanted was more fatalities.

“We know that by committing offenses, people are putting other people at risk,” he said. 

“We make no apology for holding people to account. 

“We will be charging people, we will be catching people.

“It would be a fantastic event if despite our efforts we caught no one this summer, but unfortunately statistics say that we will.”

The We’ve Been Everywhere campaign features a television commercial that will also be featured online, as well as radio advertising and targeted variable message signs.
