Commissioned through Colony 47, the walking track is designed to showcase Tasmanian Aboriginal culture through mosaics and sculptures.

Everyone from community leaders to council members was on hand for the unveiling of the site, which featured a smoke ceremony.

Colony 47 Northern Manager Elizabeth Daly expected the trail to be a drawcard for the region  

“The trail is a permanent exhibition that the whole community can enjoy and be proud of,” she said

Trail Coordinator Martin Hay said the unique mix of handcrafted pavers, rock art and native gardens was created with the community in mind.

“Everything about the trail is local,” he said.

“Not only was it developed with local artists and Aboriginal community members, but it has engaged many people from the broader community throughout its journey from inception to its opening,” Mr Hay said.

“Kooparoona Niara is the Tasmanian Aboriginal name for the Great Western Tiers meaning ‘Mountains of the Spirits’.

“The Cultural Trail is a special place for Tasmanian Aboriginal people to come together to practice and share culture with a community focus.”
