Launceston residents have extended the life of the city’s landfill cells by about six months after recycling more than 7500 tonnes of materials this year.

The land fills have been extended through the region’s kerbside recycling collection bins and by dropping off recyclable materials at the recycling facility.
More than 541,000 recycling bins across the municipality have been lifted through out the year, which has diverted 6000 tonnes materials.
Ratepayers will save about $600,000 because of the landfill extension.
Aluminium cans, glass bottles, paper, newspaper, cardboard and plastic containers were recycled.
“A further 1500 tonnes of material were dropped off at the Launceston Waste Centre’s recycling facility, including 110 tonnes of white goods,” a City of Launceston spokesman said.
Nearly 3000 cubic metres of re-usable items were re-sold through the re-use shop Uptipity which is operated by City Mission.
The food organics, garden organics collection service now has 5000 members and collects about 40 tonnes or organic material weekly.
A further 1500 tonnes of material were dropped off at the Launceston Waste Centre’s recycling facility.
