Our Youth of Today
I READ about young folks hooning the highways, being tasered when non-compliant and placing public and innocent people in harm’s way and not giving a razoo.

So we place them in institutions like Ashley or jail if it’s a serious crime. We have children not being safe with families and we try to accommodate the ill inflicted parents.
This is more of a 20th century issue as before we could grab our children with both hands and be able to say to them: “Stop this behaviour or else suffer the consequences”, be it bed with no dinner, or a slap on the bottom.
This is all in the past now. Our children dictate their wants and feelings and goodness gracious me, if we do not comply.
So when they fall and make wrong choices, and end up in the above, the parents are the really bad people, because why did we not show them discipline?
I understand that some of our beautiful offspring cannot do any wrong but that is a personal perception of the beloved parent and when things go pear shaped, society is to blame.
No-one has a manual on raising our gifts of life, but common sense should prevail.
We want our children to be accepted and loved by all, but how can that be when we raise insolent self-absorbed humans that have no respect for anyone or anything?
My sincere apologies to those amazing young people that respect and love this world and all it has to offer, and I am so apologetic that you sweethearts have to see the sad side of life.
Children should always be children and not subjected to violence, but to storytelling, love and sweetness throughout their young lives, but I guess this 20th century thinks it knows better.
God help the future generation because us young parents and old grandparents have given up.

Letters
I HAVE just read an excellent letter by Malcolm Scott regarding the failed TasWater takeover bid by the state government and am in total agreement.
It's doubtful at best that this asset grab (if that's what it was) would have seen things any better than they are.
They really should focus on other things re the upcoming state election but I suspect that we have a case of dented egos involved and that may cloud members' judgement in this case.
Also, contrary to recent letters in these pages, the Legislative Council vote was by no means a Labor "stitch-up".
There are no less than 10 independent members in the upper house, with four Labor and one Liberal. Seven of those independents voted against the takeover, nearly half the house without any influence from either of the major parties.
So let's get on with some policies that will benefit Tasmania and some original thinking from all parties instead of the same old tired forestry et al that we are heartily sick of.

Trump’s economy
ACCORDING to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics more Americans are in the workforce than ever in its history.
More than 2 million jobs have been added to the US economy in less than a year of President Donald Trump's policies compared to 4.8 million jobs lost in Barack Obama's first 11 months.
America now has the lowest unemployment rate in 18 years and the highest stock market ever. This is good for every American.
Companies are moving back to America from overseas, money is being reinvested in America due to Trump's new tax policies and more Americans now have much more of their own money in their own pockets.
But by all means, let’s bag Trump every chance we get.

Ann Street hero
THERE are rarely very good news stories around so I have one I would like to share with you.
I am 88 years old and early this week I was driving down Ann Street when I heard a peculiar noise in my car, I pulled over into the nearest parking space and got out to find I had a flat tyre. After a few choice words I was looking for a roadside assist number when a young man who was just packing up a building site opposite, came across the road to help.
After a cuddle for Tilly my labrador pup – a chock under the front, car jacked up – wheel off (with a big bolt embedded) spare wheel on, tools back in place – in less than 10 minutes and I was ready to go.
Thank you to that very helpful young man and good luck with your new baby in February.

Same-Sex Marriage
IT APPEARS that the Prime Minister is very keen to claim credit for passing of marriage equality.
Unfortunately this comes at the end of Parliament’s sittings for the year so those conservatives who opposed the Bill and could not obtain any concessions with regard to religious freedom will have plenty of opportunity away from the public gaze to increase the pressure with regard to replacing Malcolm Turnbull before the next general election.

‘Salvator Mundi’
LEONARDO da Vinci's painting "Salvator Mundi' (Latin for - savior of the world) on the November 15 this year became the most expensive painting ever sold.
A Saudi prince is now the owner, forking out a cool $450 million for a depiction of Jesus Christ painted by da Vinci in AD1500 possibly for Louis X11 of France.
Interesting, those who new Jesus best, his disciples Matthew, Mark, Luke and John do not describe what Jesus looked like in their Gospels (probably with good reason) yet, Saudi prince Bader believes Leonardo has got it right (and it's by da Vinci himself).
So be it - Happy Christmas to all and happy birthday 'Salvator Mundi'.
