The auction will be displaying what they say is the largest collection of petrol memorabilia, garagenalia, and collectables in Australia, with some iconic collectable items in the mix.
Auctioneer Neil O’Brien said around 70 per cent of the items came from one collector.
“He had been collecting for over 40 year, and had memorabilia in his collection from Australia and from overseas,” Mr O’Brien said.
“He had it all set up in his shed – it looked like a museum.
“He made the decision to move house, and didn’t want to take the whole collection with him, so he sold pretty much all of it,” he said.
“It’s the best single collection of original enamel signs from one collector in Australia.
“We’re quite proud, because the seller had received offers from larger auctions on the mainland, but he had seen how we worked and decided to sell with us,” Mr O’Brien said.
Though it makes up a lot of the collection, Mr O’Brien said there’s a lot more than petrol memorabilia on display.
“There are other items from railways, taxis, carnivals, and banners and motorbikes,” he said, “There are also cars, such as a 1947 Cadillac.”
The auction is set to be a big one, Mr O’Brien said.
“A lot of people will be coming from the mainland and from around the state,” Mr O’Brien said.
“There will be around 670 lots...it should take around 7 hours to get through. It will definitely be bigger than our last one.
“It took us three days and three nights to set it all up,” Mr O’Brien said.
Mr O’Brien said some of the most interesting items in the collection are a Shell sign that’s expected to go for around $15,000, and the 1947 Cadillac that should go for around $20,000.
Other interesting items include old toy cars, pedal cars, and petrol pumps.
“It’s amazing how much some of these items will go for,” Mr O’Brien said.
Though he said everything in the collection is a stand-out, Mr O’Brien said his favorite is the shark’s head that came from a carnival.
“It reminds me of the movie Jaws,” he said.
The auction is set to begin at 10am on Saturday December 16. For more information, head online to www.armitageauctions.com.
