Having joined forces with Ashlee Ankudinoff to take out last week’s Melbourne 6 Day event in Victoria, Cure will defend her omnium national championship title on Friday before teaming up with Perth Olympian Georgia Baker in Saturday’s madison national championships.
The pair will be joined in both races by fellow Tasmanians Lauren Perry and Macey Stewart, who will compete in the madison with Victorian Ruby Roseman-Gannon Queensland’s Kristina Clonan respectively.
Gilmore, himself a former madison world champion, said Cure and Stewart loomed as the state’s best medal chances across the two events.
“Amy Cure is just in a class of her own,” Gilmore said.
“The way that she was riding in the 6 Day during the week, she was very, very good so I’d expect a podium performance from her in both the omnium and the madison.
“(Amy and Georgia) have been training together in Adelaide in the high performance unit and preparing for the national title, they know each other well and obviously we’re expecting big things.
“Macey Stewart has certainly got some very good form off the back of the Oceania championships and down here so I’d really expect those two to be punting for podium performances.”
Eighteen-year-old Zack Gilmore is the state’s sole representative in the men’s events, with North-West young gun Cam McPherson set to ride in the under-19 events.
The weekend will mark Gilmore’s first ever senior national championships, but his coach says he will be up for the challenge.
“(He) had a good Melbourne 6 Day and showed a bit.
“This is his first real exposure to senior level at a national competition so it’s a little bit of unchartered water and more of a fact-finding mission than anything to see how he is going and will transition into the seniors.”
The omnium racing will run from 10am to 6.30pm on Friday, with madison competition to begin at 6.45pm on Saturday.
