After winning Tasmania’s First Lego League competition in November, the team was invited to participate at the national championships, with just two weeks to figure out how to get there.
The George Town community rallied around the team, holding fundraisers such as raffles and sausage sizzles to try and raise enough money to fly the students over. Individual donations also came through.
The University of Tasmania’s School of Engineering and ICT’s donation put the team over the top, and allowed the students to get to the mainland to compete.
“Our students don’t often get the chance to compete against others on a national level, and this was such a great opportunity we wanted to do all that we could to get them there,” college principal Richard Chapman said.
Though the students were unable to replicate their state success, they had a great time and learned much along the way.
