Christmas came early for a selection of health organisations at St Leonard’s Primary School on Monday, with the announcement of the state government’s Community Innovation Grants.

An initiative of Healthy Tasmania, more than $500,000 will be used to fund projects focused on quitting smoking, healthy eating, physical activity and community connection.
More than 25 successful applicants were announced in the first of two funding rounds, with more that $1 million on offer across three years.
(The government) can’t do everything, and shouldn’t try to, because the community has good ideas as well.
Health Minister Michael Ferguson congratulated representatives from the successful organisations and encouraged students and school staff to always prioritise their health.
“The government has a responsibility to look out for the health and welfare of our community,” he said.
“It can’t do everything, and shouldn’t try to, because the community has good ideas as well.
“We want everyone to be as healthy as they can be.”
The remaining funds will be allocated to projects selected in application rounds in 2018 and 2019.
