Road Safety Task Force police officers detected the motorcyclist allegedly travelling at 158km/h in an 80km/h zone near the Summerleas Road exit ramp on Friday evening.
The 35-year-old male rider was arrested, charged and bailed to appear in the Hobart Court of Petty Sessions at a later date.
The motorcycle was seized by police due to the excessive speed.
“This motorcyclist was travelling at 158km/h in a signposted 80km/h road, he was riding a high powered motorcycle, at almost twice the speed limit,” Acting Sergeant Drew Redburn said.
“Travelling at this speed not only placed his life, but also the lives of other road users in very real danger.”
Police said they did not pursue the motorcycle – it was safely intercepted at the rider’s address.
A Tasmania Police statement said officers were “disappointed with this kind of dangerous behaviour”.
“Many of the fatalities so far this year have involved motorcyclists and this manner of riding is totally unacceptable,” the statement said.
“Motorists and motorcyclists need to take responsibility for their actions on our roads heading into the holiday period.”
Police would like to hear from any person who may have seen the black motorcycle travelling at high speed on the Southern Outlet, heading south, abound 9pm on Friday evening. Anyone with information can call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
