The 21-year-old may be an avid member of Launceston’s LGBTI community, but he said his support for same-sex marriage stemmed from his family.
“I have an older sister who is also gay and has a partner, so it’s great that she will now be able to get married,” he said.
“I mainly wanted it so other people I knew could have the option.”
A same-sex marriage bill was passed in parliament on Thursday after a resounding result in the postal survey.
Hayden said the vote reflected a greater understanding of same sex couples.
“My grandma has said that if the vote was held 20 years ago, she would have voted no,” he said.
“Now with me and my sister, she understands more about why it is important and wants to see it happen as well."
There will be plenty more reason to celebrate this Saturday when Hayden hosts a drag night a Club 54.
Starting at 9pm, more than 10 performers are booked in for the event, which is being used to raise funds for The Examiner’s Empty Stocking Appeal.
Entry for the Club 54 drag night is $5.
