City of Launceston general manager Michael Stretton said the tree, near the corner of Brisbane Street, Launceston, will be replaced “in the near future”.
He said the council maintained a tree nursery for incidents when new trees were required.
They may be impacting on infrastructure, may have been subject to vandalism or inadvertent damage, or are simply unsuitable.

"Trees in the CBD are occasionally removed for a number of reasons, where they may be impacting on infrastructure, may have been subject to vandalism or inadvertent damage, or are simply unsuitable for a particular location," he said.
“Generally, the City of Launceston replaces any trees removed in these circumstances with the same species, or a more suitable species, if required.”
In 2012 the council had planned to spend $190,000 planting more trees along Wellington and Bathurst streets, but the concept was changed with road safety in mind.
That year the Launceston Street Tree Strategy was developed to provide a coordinated, strategic approach to the planting of street trees.
