Football Federation Tasmania has announced a five-year plan to increase the number of registered players from 12,000 to 20,000 by 2023.
The plan details major infrastructure upgrades to KGV in Glenorchy followed by “the establishment of an artificial pitch in Launceston”.
Although the location of a Northern artificial pitch was not specified, it is understood to be at the Churchill Park complex.
FFT president Sean Collins said a number of key aspects had to be assessed before artificial pitches could be considered.
“With four senior clubs based out of the Northern city, it makes sense to develop a dedicated playing facility that can act as the home of football in Northern Tasmania.” he said.
“This can provide players with access to weatherproof facilities all year round.
“With over 20,000 people attending football games in Tasmania each weekend throughout the 2017 season, the need for upgraded facilities is paramount.”
An audit conducted by the federation, involving a consultation with all clubs, associations and key stakeholders, provided the platform to discuss current and future demands.
“Football has previously been overlooked for funding initiatives,” Collins added.
“As a result the quality of facilities has failed to keep up with the current demand and many clubs do not have regular or sufficient access to grounds.”
The federation believes investing in these upgrades would provide a significant boost to Tasmanian communities and the economy.
