Topor-Stanley returned to the Jets this year after a four successful seasons with the Western Sydney Wanders and a brief stint at Hatta in Dubai.

After signing with the club the 32-year-old spoke with Fairfax Media about changing the mentality at Newcastle and with just one loss this campaign it appears they've taken note.

The Jets have flourished in attack and scored a league-high 20 goals in eight games, a stark contrast to the 28 they netted in 27 fixtures last season.

Roy O'Donovan leads the golden boot race with seven scores and the Jets have six more goals than table-toppers Sydney FC, while Topor-Stanley has been a pillar of strength in the competition's second-best defence.

First-year Jets coach Ernie Merrick lured Topor-Stanley back to Newcastle with the promise of success after the Scotsman won two A-League championships in six seasons at the helm Melbourne Victory.

Topor-Stanley said it had been a great start to the season but emphasised there was a long way to go and no room for complacency.

"The club recruited well in terms of personnel and we've got a coach that gives attacking players a lot of freedom to do as they see fit and we're turning that into goals," Topor-Stanley said.

"In modern football we all try to work as a team, attacking and defending is done by everyone but it helps when you've got the guys up front putting it in the back of the net.

"Ernie gives those players attacking freedom and it's working, that's his style and we've scored more goals than any other team by far this season - and goals win games.

"It's still early, we've started well and we want to continue but there's still a long way to go, so we'll keep working hard and making our way towards finals."

Topor-Stanley backed Merrick to take Newcastle to the finals for the first time in seven seasons and said 64-year-old's resume speaks for itself.

"His approach is a good mix, he's hard on us when he needs to be and lets us know when he's disappointed and things aren't up to scratch, but the biggest thing is he trusts his players," Topor-Stanley said.

"If you don't have belief before the start the season then you're not with a chance, you have to have believe in yourself as individual and as a group.

"Our target is to win it all and it's a salary cap competition so there's no reason why we can't and no reason we won't, I'm not saying we're the best team by far and we're going to win, but that's the aim."

The experienced centre-back won an AFC Champions League title with the Wanderers and captained the club to three A-League grand finals in four years.

Topor-Stanley said his time at the Wanderers made him a more rounded player and that he's trying to pass on those lessons to his Jets' teammates.

"From a personal perspective I learnt a hell of a lot about myself as professional and a footballer and how to conduct myself and how to get the best out of myself mentally more than anything," Topor-Stanley said

"I've learnt from that experience and tried to show it to some players but it's not a case of trying to carbon copy what we did at the Wanderers, Ernie has his own style and we're implementing that."
