Denison Labor MLC Madeleine Ogilvie said the policy would ensure requirements for providing protection for local character was community led.

“A Labor government also will not set unrealistic deadlines for the creation of local provisions because they are crucial to get right and they require extensive public consultation, it’s this consultation that is at the very heart of our approach to good planning processes,” she said.

She also confirmed Labor’s position on changing laws around projects of state and regional significance.

“We will not support giving call-in powers to a single Minister for projects such as high-rise developments. Parliament must have the final say,” she said.

If elected, Labor will conduct a review into the new statewide planning system and the Reserve Activity Assessment process for developments within National Parks. 

TCT Director Peter McGlone said they would continue to lobby for Labor to strengthen its policy to give the public a say over developments on public land.

“The highlight of the Labor planning policy is that they have ruled out changes to existing major projects legislation and oppose ministerial call-in powers for major projects, clearly distinguishing them from the Liberals on this key issue,” he said.

“The biggest disappointments are in relation to developments in reserved land, fish farms and concerns over loss of urban character and amenity, where the Labor policy makes no commitments.” 

He questioned the reviews, saying with no timeframes they may achieve nothing.

PMAT Coordinator Sophie Underwood said while the Labor Party has responded to some of the community’s issues they had not committed to action on a number of fundamental concerns shared by the alliance’s 54 member groups.

Planning Minister Peter Gutwein said Labor had merely “thrown their support behind” the Liberals’ plan.

“Their “me too” planning policy includes supporting our state-wide planning scheme, our already announced review of the Reserve Activity Assessment process and Iplan which is already in place and provides for real time tracking of planning approvals,” he said.
