The bureau has forecast thunderstorms and large hailstones throughout Friday afternoon and evening, for parts of the East Coast, Midlands, Central Plateau and North East.
Towns that may be affected include Oatlands, Swansea, Bicheno, Orford, Fingal, and Bothwell.
The SES has recommended residents in the forecast areas should take emergency precautions such as:
- Move vehicles under cover.
- Seek shelter, preferably indoors and never under trees.
- Avoid using the telephone during a thunderstorm.
- Beware of fallen trees and powerlines.
- For emergency assistance contact the SES on 132 500.
The bureau said that a trough of low pressure, combined with warm temperatures and high humidity, was providing “favourable” conditions for thunderstorms.
