Located on George Town Road next to TasTAFE’s Alanvale campus, the $1.66 million purpose-built neighborhood house will be run in partnership with the Rocherlea and Mowbray community centres.
Northern Suburbs Community House manager Denise Delphin said the Newnham centre is something the community deserves.
“There are a lot of people to thank for this project,” she said.
“A lot of champions who have helped us get a space that that our community really deserves.
“There is a really diverse representation of our community here today, which I think reflects that.”
More than 200 people attended Friday’s opening, with a plaque unveiling by Parliamentary Secretary Sarah Courtney.
The club’s president Grahame Ryan said the building designed by ARTAS had involved four years of planning and would serve as an extension of the already existing services organised by Northern Suburbs Community House.
“This whole process has been intensive at times but I think what we have here today is a testament to what we offer,” he said.
“We only moved in a month ago and are still discovering the new groups and demographics for this area.”
Mr Ryan said the Newnham centre will be used for both formal and informal meetings, with plans to reestablish the community garden and shed already underway.
‘We have a lot of plans and the council have been very supportive of that,” he said.
“We really feel now like we are a part of the rebirth of Launceston that is happening.”
