Launched in conjunction with the organisation’s Christmas Appeal, the aim of the project is to inspire kids to help each other and experience what it is like to give to someone less fortunate.
Children have the opportunity to purchase a Christmas heart decoration kit for $5, with all funds going towards providing a gift for another child who would otherwise go without on Christmas Day.
The heart theme coincides with City Mission’s Christmas Appeal message that ‘The best thing to open this Christmas is your heart’.
City Mission chief executive Stephen Brown said the decorations serve as reminder of the buyer’s generosity.
“Our Kids Giving Project is another way kids can get involved in helping those less fortunate in their own community,” he said.
“We hope this may become a tradition for some families with the kits featuring a different theme each year.
“As adults, we have a role to play in helping children to develop social awareness and to foster kindness and understanding.
“There are many ways we can do this, such as encouraging kids to donate toys and books they’ve outgrown or through volunteering their time to do something for someone who may need a helping hand.”
The City Mission Christmas decoration kits will be available from City Mission Shops throughout the North and North West of Tasmania from Wednesday, November 22.
