Members from the infamous outlaw motorcycle gang arrived in the state on Saturday and more are expected to travel down for the official national run on Friday.

Western District Commander Jonathan Higgins said there would be a large police presence, including officers from interstate, similar to when the Rebels arrived last month.

“When there is more than 300 motorcycles on the road, it is a significant traffic hazard,” he said.

“It can be very intimidating for other drivers when they ride in formation so one of the reasons there will be such a large police presence is we assist the riders in moving from point to point.”

Police will also undertake vehicle checks, targeted drug and alcohol testing, monitoring for anti-social and criminal behaviour and traffic operations.

Commander Higgins said the members who were already in the state had been “fairly compliant”, with only minor traffic breaches reported.

But he attributed that to regular communications between police and the Bandidos.

In October, police confirmed the Bandidos had bought a property in East Devonport and established a “prospect” chapter.

More recently, police confirmed the gang was eyeing off Launceston and Hobart for additional chapters.

Unlike other states in Australia, Tasmania has limited laws against bikies.

In Queensland, riders are banned from wearing colours and patches in public and in New South Wales, there are restrictions on who convicted criminals can associate with.

Police Minister Rene Hidding said the government was working closely with Tasmania Police to “ensure we have strong, contemporary laws to keep the community safe”.

“My message to Outlaw Motor Cycle Gangs is that Tasmania Police won’t tolerant any illegal activities,” Mr Hidding said.
