Tasmania Fire Service confirmed it appeared the fire was started from a burnt out, discarded vehicle on Rifle Range Road on Saturday evening.
Fire crews were having difficulty reaching the fire as it had started spreading into bushland which borders on state forest, Tasmania Fire Service said.
A medium tanker, heavy tanker and two light tankers have arrived at the fire, they said.
The fire was first reported about 5.15pm and Tasmania Police are also on the scene.
