The council’s general Manager Michael Stretton said the preliminary works involve stabilisation of the northern river bank to create a new hardstand area for the rowing club.
The works will also accommodate the contractor's site compound once bridge works get underway.
“Work on the bridge is expected to start in coming weeks,” Mr Stretton said.
“Meanwhile, we are also undertaking some maintenance work on the Seaport levee. The work is aimed at preventing erosion from beneath the concrete levee, and will ensure it remains in good working order for the next three to four decades.”
Mr Stretton said the levee work is expected to be complete by Monday.
The bridge will negate the need for pedestrians and cyclists to cross the busy Charles Street bridge and detour around the flood levee.
The design features three arches, with the centre of the bridge clearing the one in 2000 year flood level.
