After becoming the first Australian to coach the Socceroos to a World Cup, Postecoglou wanted to enjoy his moment in the sun rather than address the speculation over whether he would see out the final nine months of his contract.

Speaking the day after Australia's 3-1 win over Honduras at ANZ Stadium that sealed their ticket to Russia, Postecoglou gave no indication as to whether he would be on the plane to Moscow in June to lead Australia into their fifth World Cup appearance.

The FFA are eagerly awaiting his decision, but are set to be kept in the dark for up to two more weeks before a meeting between chairman Lowy, CEO Gallop and Postecoglou will bring an end to the uncertainty over the national team's most important position.

"We'll deal with that over the next couple of weeks, obviously it has to happen fairly quickly. I'm mindful of the fact there's a lot of planning that needs to keep moving forward, it's not about me trying to keep people in suspense," Postecoglou said. "We'll have those discussions with David and Steven over the next couple of weeks and it will all be resolved."

Speaking at a public reception celebrating the Socceroos' qualification, Postecoglou described the 22-game, 29-month process as the toughest and most demanding job in his coaching career but also the most rewarding. He praised the performance of the players, the support of his background staff while giving no indication that he will continue with the team to Russia.

"It's not an easy decision and everything is taken into account. I'll have those discussions with the right people over the next couple of weeks and it will all get resolved fairly quickly. Nothing will detract from what I've experienced the last four years. It's been an amazing ride and I've loved every minute of it," he said.

Gallop, made no secret of the federation's desire for Postecoglou to see out his contract and stay on for the culmination of the project, begun in the wake of the 2014 World Cup, of rejuvenating the squad in time for Russia 2018. .

"My pitch is 'it's hard to imagine going to Russia without you'," Gallop said. "We'll have to sit down over the next fortnight and map out where that's at and give some clarity to what is a hugely important position in terms of the preparation for Russia."

However, the governing body won't wait on the upcoming meeting before beginning contingencies plans for their future. It's understood they have already begun identifying potential replacements for Postecoglou in the event he decides to leave the Socceroos with Sydney FC coach Graham Arnold among the top contenders to replace him.

Fairfax Media understands Arnold's success in the A-League and history in Australian football puts his name among the frontrunners with some very preliminary discussions having taken place in the background.

A foreign option remains a possibility and already the football department of the FFA have established a succession plan for Postecoglou's departure based purely on continuing with the Socceroos' attacking style of play and football philosophy. That succession plan has identified several overseas-based coaches whose style of play is consistent with that of Postecoglou.

"We've always been conscience that football is fluid, you only have to look at the Wanderers this year that change can come and it can come quickly, both for players and coaches. Of course, we have those sorts of discussions but the next important one is with Ange," Gallop said.

Despite having the support of the players and most fans to remain with Australia in Russia, Postecoglou made no secret of the toll the job has placed on him and the difficulty of the past four years.

"We had to rebuild the team, we had to rebuild the national team unit. We had to play a way that's fairly demanding and to be sitting here four years later and having achieved all that, it;s the hardest thing I've ever done. Coaching your country is such as special honour but it does carry a special burden. This is my country, this is where I live and you don't want to let people down," Postecoglou said.
