And it will be even more fun and informative with a copy of the Tasmanian Summer Racing Carnival Guide.
Horses bred to race, dogs bred to run, trainers who take these fine athletes to the top level and jockey and drivers who play a risky game of strategy in a test of skill and endurance – this is what racing is about.
The Summer Racing Carnival in Tasmania sends the industry into overdrive and its major events are the pinnacle of the social and sporting calendar.
What a great time to get together with friends and family, make a day or evening of it and spend some time at the State’s top racing venues.
You’ll be surprised at how family-friendly they are – the kids are always considered along with the adults – and the food on offer ranges from quick snacks to gourmet dining experiences, or simply pack your own picnic.
I love standing beside the mounting yard, taking in the sight and smells of horses and harness, trying to pick the personalities and marvelling how riders and drivers contain the coil of energy at their fingertips.
I pick out a winner, it’s rarely right, but what fun it is to follow its journey through the field.
