When Evandale Gardening Group set a fundraising target of $3000 for their open garden day, they thought it was “wildly optimistic”.

However, group member Jan Foote said not only did they reach their target, they more than doubled it.

The open garden day was the first fundraiser for the group of six, which started earlier this year.

“It’s beyond our wildest dreams,” Ms Foote said.

They raised $6700 for Breast Cancer Network Australia after the community banded together and about 500 passed through the private gardens earlier this month.

Ms Foote said the group wanted to thank the Evandale community, garden owners, businesses and members of the public for their support.

“One of the nicest things about the event was the community pulled together to help.”

Already they had people asking whether they would repeat the event, but Ms Foote said they would consider it after Christmas.

“It’s a big thing to organise … we did it within two months on a shoe-string budget.”
