It’s not the first time the duo have paired up to promote the day, and Jones Snr said it was always good to see more members of the younger generation getting involved in the cause.

“We find that a lot of younger people are becoming more aware when it comes to Remembrance Day,” he said.

“On our Vietnam Vets Day, we had a choir from Riverside High School come and sing, before joining us for afternoon tea.

“Even on Anzac Day, you always get a good crowd of youngsters and families, which is great.”

After joining the army as a 21-year-old, Mr Jones spent seven months in Vietnam during 1971. 

He returned to Australia, but found he couldn’t settle down and eventually re-enlisted, before going on to spend another two decades in the armed services.

Since retiring in 1993, he has thrown his support into various veteran organisations, including the Launceston Vietnam Veterans Association. 

He said the support network always extended beyond Launceston.

“When you’re on the committees, you have a lot of contact with not only branches in the surrounding areas, but also the mainland,” he said.

“From when I retired, it gave me something to do, which was what I needed.” 

Remembrance Day will be held on Saturday, November 11.
