Police have confirmed that an 80-year-old-woman has died following an accident at Newstead.
The woman was travelling north on Penquite Road at around 2.30pm when she crossed onto the incorrect side of the road and collided head on with a power pole.
Fire services were required to extricate the woman from the vehicle, before she was transported to Launceston General Hospital in a critical condition.
The woman was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
No other vehicles were involved in the crash.
Crash investigation and forensic services attended the scene, with police investigating if a medical condition was the cause of the accident.
Police do not believe that speed or weather conditions were a factor.
UPDATE 3.30pm:
An elderly woman has been taken to hospital in a serious condition after she veered off the road and crashed into a pole, police say.
It is understood the 80-year-old driver may have suffered a medical condition, which police believe could have been a factor in the crash.
“It appears she made no attempt to break before hitting the pole,” police at the scene said.
Police have yet to make contact with the woman’s family.
Traffic continues to be diverted and drivers are urged to avoid the area.

Traffic is being diverted at Newstead after a ‘serious crash’.
Police and emergency services are at the scene on Penquite Road, near the Campbell Street intersection.
Police said it was a single vehicle crash and traffic was being diverted down David Street as a result.
Details of injuries are unknown.
