A crowd of classical music lovers packed the pews to hear the famous work, which has gone on to have a life of its own in the centuries since the passing of its original composer.
Conductor Margaret Hoban said the piece always demanded a musician’s full attention.
“There aren’t any extra notes to hide in,” she said.
“It has quite a few slow tempos which give it a stretching quality.
“Everyone has had to work really hard, but overall, the preparation has gone smoothly.”
Sunday’s performance also acted as tribute to long time Don Chorale musical director and pianist, Kent Furmage, who passed away in June.
Don Chorale members travelled from Devonport to attend weekly rehearsals for the event.
