It’s this shocking statistic that a Edu.Cat, new in-schools program, hopes to address.
Centre community and education manager Rose Bray said she believed Edu.Cat was the first program of its kind in Australia.
All of the 265 students at St Leonard Primary School participated in the program to learn about the behaviour of cats, ways to care for them, de-sexing, and the impact they can have on the environment.
They were the first school in Northern Tasmania to receive the free four program and there are hopes to expand it across the north of the state.
The interactive program catered for different age groups and aimed to “create social change”, encouraging de-sexing and responsible cat ownership, she said.
As for the cute kitten visitors, they are available for adoption by visiting Launceston Animal Care Centre between 10am and 3.30pm from Monday to Saturday.
