In a survey by The Examiner, more than 73 per cent of people said pedestrian countdown timers should be installed at every intersection.
The survey came after the state government announced it would trial the timers in Launceston and Hobart.
Survey respondents said the timers worked well in other states and countries, including Brisbane, Darwin, Canada and the US, deeming the trial unnecessary.
“Works in Darwin, so why does it need to be trialled?” Mark Gumley said on Facebook.
Many people said installing the countdown timers would only work if people crossed with the traffic lights.
“This is only good for people who actually use pedestrian crossings at lights. You can't stop [people] running across the road wherever they feel like it,” Marina Petric said.
Other respondents believe the pedestrian crossing signals do not last long enough to enable people to cross safely.
