The opening ceremony commenced on Saturday night with an athletes march involving local school students carrying homemade banners.
After a welcome to country, Premier Will Hodgman officially declared the Masters Games open.
“This is one of Australia’s premier sporting events and it is wonderful to welcome it back to Tasmania for the first time since 1987,” he said.
Launceston hockey player Lynnette Mason is one of thousands involved in the multi-sport competition.
“It’s really good and I’m really proud to be part of the games, especially when they’re in my home state,” she said.
