After pulling off a shock upset over reigning premier South Launceston last weekend the Lions picked up where they left off to snatch two bonus points from a nine-wicket win.
Sent into the field by Wynyard, the Lions showed no mercy with the ball and reduced the Blues to 6-39 before Brodie Stokes (34) and Gregg Sharman (23 not out) showed some resistance to take the score to 94.
Tom Gray, Rowan Smith and Dom Rawlings all collected two scalps as the Lions shared around the wickets.
The Lions then chased down the total in 22 overs with skipper Alistair Taylor (51) the sole wicket to fall - run out when his side was two runs shy of victory.
Taylor said his side had executed a simple plan to perfection.
“We only won one game before Christmas last year and to win two on the trot really early it sets up next week perfectly, the club’s in a good space and all the boys are full of confidence,” he said.
“Rowan Smith and Tom Gray were fantastic to start us off and the boys that followed just continued, we had simple plans and we executed perfectly for the 30-odd overs we bowled.”
WESTBURY recorded its first win of the season with an eight-wicket battering of Sheffield.
After sending the Mountaineers in to bat the Shamrocks put on a clinical bowling performance to knock the visitors over for 56 in the 37th over.
Only Richard Miles (13) made it into double figures as recruit Alex Kerrison helped his side knock over the last six wickets for 10 runs.
Dane Anderson (33) and captain Richard Howe (22 not out) then went and picked off the runs inside 13 overs to claim a double bonus point for the home side.
“It was probably the first team effort we’d put in for the year and the bowlers did a really good job,” Howe said after the game.
“Losing the first couple of games wasn’t ideal but to bounce back today was fantastic and the way we went about it was awesome.”
Howe paid special credit to his bowling outfit for restricting Sheffield to one-and-a-half runs an over.
“Alex Kerrison bowled really well and Jake Williams through the middle there did a really good job for us.
“Alex took his first wicket and ended up with 3-8 off eight overs and Jake was 2-10 off seven as well which is really good, for those guys to do what they did today was awesome.”
MOWBRAY kept its spotless record intact with a nine-wicket win over Ulverstone.
The Eagles again showed their chasing prowess, this time chasing down 153 with five overs to spare.
“We’re feeling pretty good about the cricket we’re playing at the moment, we seem to be having some really even team contributions,” captain John LeFevre said.
“Everyone’s pretty aware of their roles and responsibilities in the team, so we’re really pleased with how we’re going and pleased to get a win against who we think are a pretty good team at Ulverstone.”
Mowbray had momentum early but Josh Walmsley (59) and Austin Jones (28) rallied to put on 71 for the third wicket.
But with the score on 100 a wicket finally fell, allowing Mowbray to rip through the order.
Sagar Chhetri bowled 44 dot balls to finish with 3-31 while LeFevre was everywhere in the field, snaffling four catches and completing a run-out.
The Eagles put on two 75-plus stands to win the match with Luke Scott (57) and LeFevre (47) returning to the sheds unbeaten.
A magnificent knock from Latrobe batsman Trent Keep consigned SOUTH LAUNCESTON to its second consecutive defeat.
Keep came to the wicket with the score at 1-1 and batted through the next 45 overs to see his side surpass the Knights’ total of 8-200 with six wickets in hand.
The Latrobe coach finished one run shy of a century and put on 88 for the fifth wicket with Nathan Avery (31).
Knights skipper Alec Smith said while there had been some highlights his side’s effort had been “pretty average”.
“Jack and Casey (Young) bowled a really good first spell,” Smith said.
“We got an early wicket which was pleasing and we restricted their runs well but then through the middle overs we failed to get a couple of wickets in clumps and they scored pretty freely, Trent Keep batted really well.”
Earlier, South battled hard to reach 200 after a brutal spell from Zac Nicolle (6-37) had the Knights flailing at 4-25 early in the innings.
A century stand from keeper Tom Waller (74) and Jared Dakin (48) got the Knights back in the game but Smith said his side’s total was ultimately 30 or 40 runs short.
“Without them we would have really struggled to even be competitive so they gave us a chance, we’re very thankful they did well.”
A six-wicket haul from Ramesh Sundra wasn’t enough to see RIVERSIDE over the line in a tough match against Burnie.
The Hurricanes made 213 batting first thanks to 94 from first-drop Josh Barry but Riverside never looked like chasing the total, with stand-in captain Ollie Wood (42) one of only two Blues to reach double figures.
Barry and Shaun Redman both claimed three wickets for Burnie as the Blues sunk to a 121-run loss.
“It was obviously a pretty disappointing day, any time you get bowled out for a low score it's disappointing,” Wood said.
“But at the end of the day it’s done now so you’ve got to look forward to next week.”
