Just two days after missing out on being selected in the AFLW national draft, the talented 17-year-old was training at a Cricket Australia development program in Brisbane when news came through Carlton had selected her with the third-last pick of the rookie draft.
“It was pretty overwhelming to be honest, I did have a cry,” Webb said.
“I was fielding when it was all announced and I came off and my best friend (Emma Manix-Geeves) told me I’d made it – it was pretty emotional.”
The Tassie Roar all-rounder will finish her year 12 exams before moving to Victoria in late November to join up with her new teammates – some of whom have already contacted her.
“I've chatted with a couple of the coaches and I've received lots of messages from the players and they seem like a really welcoming group.
“I’m really excited to meet them all and start pre-season.”
Webb is the second Launceston player to join an AFLW team this week after Daria Bannister was picked up by the Western Bulldogs in Wednesday’s national draft and will be the sixth Tasmanian in the league.
Fellow Tasmanian draft combine attendees Georgia Hill (Launceston) and Loveth Ochayi (Kingborough) missed out on selection but have a strong chance of being picked up by the Tasmanian Kangaroos this time next year.
“They’ll be high on the agenda for the Tassie Kangaroos,” AFL Tasmania football development manager Leigh Elder said.
“The talent academy will only take them to the next step and as long as they continue to develop their game they’ll be part of that group that gets another opportunity.
“This year there was just over 50 players added to AFLW lists, next year there’ll be something like 110.”
The upcoming AFLW season will take place between February and March.
Elder said Webb would be all but assured of making her Carlton debut in 2018 despite being rookie-listed.
“As soon as there’s an injury to someone on the main list (Webb) can be elevated and played.
“The majority of AFLW clubs in their first season actually had to call people outside their lists to fill positions to play so it’ll happen in pre-season or week one.
“Opportunities will come her way there’s no doubt about it.”
