The council voted on a motion put forward by Councillor John Tucker at October's meeting to put a letter forward to the Parks and Wildlife Minister Elise Archer to "ask if the government could look at council taking over staff and infrastructure of Parks and Wildlife services in our regional area".
According to mayor Mick Tucker, the council decided to put the motion to a workshop, where councillors would investigate the potential benefits of the motion.
"There will be a report tabled at a workshop and parts of the concept will be investigated," he said.
Councillor Tucker said the department does not have enough government funding to perform its duties to the best of its abilities.
"We have an absolutely incredible working relationships with Parks, and we believe they're an incredibly professional organisation.
"The debate was not about taking over Parks, it's looking at how we can get better value out of procurement and project management out of parks.
"Parks are inundated with so many requests, and they have so little amount of money given to them to support the wide ranging role they have.”
He further commented that Break O’Day’s tourist spots were not being maintained to a satisfactory degree.
"A lot of our tourism icons are on roads [controlled by the Parks and Wildlife Service].
“We probably have the machinery and equipment to maintain those roads better than Parks.”
Minister for Parks and Wildlife Elise Archer said the department was “committed to working with the Break O’Day Council”, but will not transfer any land away from the Parks and Wildlife Service.
“Parks and Wildlife and the council has invested significantly into improving the visitor experience in the area,” she said.
“Parks is open to talking about potential partnerships, but there is no intention to transfer management of reserved land or parks staff and resources away from [Parks and Wildlife],” she said.
Parks and Wildlife were contacted for comment.
