Blood Brothers tells the unforgettable story of Mrs Johnstone who, when her husband walks out on her, leaving her penniless and pregnant, agrees to give one of her twin babies away.
They are accidentally brought together again years later through an unlikely friendship, and on the day they find out their heritage this stunningly crafted musical is brought to its shattering conclusion.
Starring Rae Smith as Mrs Johnstone, Chris Jackson as Mickey, Matthew Tomlin as Edward and Matthew Garwood as narrator, Blood Brothers show director Danny Gibson is eagerly looking forward to opening night.
“Of all musicals written to date, this one is my all-time favourite,” Mr Gibson said.
The most memorable shows have the capacity to leave a lasting effect on an audience, which is why Blood Brothers is such extraordinary theatre and extremely popular.
- Danny Gibson
“In fact, the London production of Blood Brothers ran for more than 24 years, winning every British “Best Musical” award along the way.
“It is one of only three musicals in history to play for more than 10,000 London performances – the other two are Les Misérables and The Phantom of the Opera.”
Playing one of the most coveted roles in musical theatre and returning to the Launceston stage for the first time in more than a decade, star Rae Smith admitted that playing Mrs Johnstone “is a bucket-list role for me”.
“She’s been played by some of the most extraordinary women in musical theatre’s history and for almost two decades this has been my favourite show and I have always envisaged myself playing Mrs Johnstone, a woman I relate to on many levels."
