A Department of State Growth spokeswoman said two phases are necessary to finalise the repairs.
“The first phase will correct the areas of pavement failure with hot-mixed asphalt before relaying the final road surface,” she said.
“Due to the need for curing time for the asphalt, the second phase - applying the final seal – will occur approximately one month later.”
In July the Department confirmed road workers had identified a defective seal – the top layer of sprayed bitumen and aggregate – on the new Midland Highway.
Due to weather conditions this week is the first window deemed suitable to begin repairs.
“While the aim is always to build road projects without any defects, in this case stone chips did not adhere to the bitumen and have come loose in some sections,” the spokeswoman said.
“We continue to thank all road users for their patience, and remind motorists to comply with all roadworks signs and speed limits which will be in place until repairs are complete.”
