Sharon and Jock Heazlewood entered Border Leicesters from the Roselands stud, winning champion and reserve ram for the breed and placing third in the interbreed category, Mrs Heazelwood said.
“We just missed out on second [in interbreed] by one point, which is most unusual,” Mrs Heazelwood said.
“The winner was a stand out, but two and three were close. Borders very rarely place this high; it’s usually poll dorset, white suffolk, suffolk,” she said.
Sheep judge Paul Routley from Almondvale at Urana, New South Wales, said the Heazlewood’s rams had good bodies, heads and posture.
“They are three very good representations of the breed,” Mr Routley said.
Although the Heazelwoods were the only Border Leicester breeders represented at Royal Launceston Show, it is the interbreed placing that means the most.
“It’s irrelevant what you get in the normal classes; it’s the interbreed when you’re up against the other breeds when you know how well you can go,” Mrs Heazelwood said.
Roselands stud was founded in 1913 and has been breeding sheep for more than 100 years at Whitemore.
“The family has been showing sheep since we first started breeding. Jock is the sixth generation of stud sheep breeding and showing at Roselands,” Mrs Heazelwood said.
This is the first show of the season for the Heazlewoods, who will also show at Longford and Hobart.
Royal Launceston Show also proved fruitful Platinum Angus Stud at Mount Direction.
Darryl Heazelwood showed the grand champion angus female and her calf and was thrilled with the results.
“I’m very happy with her results. It’s a great promotion to be able to win,” Mr Heazlewood said.
“She has done fairly well at shows before. She was at Hobart as a heifer and won supreme exhibit on her first go round. We’ve done really well,” he said.
Mr Heazlewood, son Tom and daughter Olivia will next show at Scottsdale.
Coleshill Farms at Riana continued its winning streak from Burnie Show in Launceston’s dairy section last week.
The stud’s six-year-old mature cow GP Serina won her senior class and supreme all breeds after also winning at Burnie Show.
Fitter Ryan Barker said the stud also picked up a win and junior champion ribbon in the 18-month-old class for Gazza Noelene; a win for the yearling heifer Gazza Jodie and reserve junior champion; and champion jersey bull for Hannibal.
“Burnie was the first of three shows [for us] and we’ve been placing well,” Mr Barker said.
“We’ve been expecting how we placed. We’ll be at Ulverstone Show next,” he said.
Exhibitors were down for this year’s Launceston event, with sheep entrant Steven French, of Whitemore, blaming the clash with the school holidays.
“The quality of the sheep is very good, but the numbers are extremely concerning. I think the sheep section of the show is in terminal demise,” Mr French said.
“Even three or four years ago this shed would have been full, but people are just not exhibiting as they were,” he said.
Holding the Launceston show during the school holidays meant school entrants, such as Bridgewater or Yolla, were not exhibiting.
“A lot of the exhibitors are from schools and they are not going to get the kids to come along during their holidays,” Mr French said.
“A lot of people work and can’t come during the week. Ever since Launceston has clashed with the school holidays it has had a huge impact of the sheep section, and I expect it has on the cattle as well,” he said.
