The 18-year-old is taking part in the Windeward Bound trust’s annual youth leadership challenge and is being sponsors by the Rotary Club of West Tamar.
“There is about 20 people who get accepted into it, 10 young Tasmanians who are mentors and then 10 youths from a refugee or disadvantaged background,” Miss Marshall said.
“Essentially the young Tasmanians go on the ship as mentors and teach the refugees what its like to be Tasmanian … you want to become friends with them, get to know them and hopefully have fun, while we are learning to become young leaders.”
The challenge is open to youths between the ages of 15 to 18 living in Tasmania and the mentors must raise $1500 to cover the cost of a refugee taking part voyage.
Since it was launched in 1996 Windeward Bound has covered more than 100,000 nautical miles.
