Professor Rathjen moves to South Australia at the end of the year to assume the same role at the University of Adelaide.
University Chancellor the Honourable Michael Field AC wrote to university staff updating them on the situation last week, saying while institutional leadership changes were not unusual, they were “historic markers in time”.
He said the search was focused on stability and strategic continuity.
“The University Council is undertaking the process of finding an academic leader capable of delivering a strategic intent which is well understood, within an environment which is highly variable,” he wrote.
Applications have closed for the role with candidates to be assessed by the panel of university council members, community and higher education sector leaders.
