Labor will task the government to explain in Parliament how it intends to reward genuine attempts at rehabilitation in prison if early releases for good behaviour are no longer an option.

The government on Tuesday released a draft bill which would remove remissions from sentences.
Opposition justice spokeswoman Lara Giddings said the party supported the abolition of the automatic early release of prisoners.
She said that Labor would consider proposals from the government on how they would incentivise prisoners for good behaviour if remissions were completely removed.
“The government needs to make the case from the complete abolition of remissions which would put increased strain on the pressure cooker situation in our prisons,” Ms Giddings said.
Community and Public Sector Union state secretary Tom Lynch said the current remission system was poorly run and unclear.
“But that is reason to fix it, not to abolish it,” he said.
