In the Port Sorell versus Burnie encounter, the Port started as they did in the early games last season and impressively defeated reigning Premiers Burnie by 13 shots, winning on two rinks and sharing another.
Josh Marshall led the way with a 10-shot win over David Gamble, Rod Everett won 28-23 over Jeremy Turner and Luke Marshall played a 25-shot draw with Patrick Smith.
It was left to the ever-reliable Mark Nitz to salvage two points for the Tigers, defeating Aaron Jago 23-21.
Ulverstone was the other surprise winner defeating South Burnie on all rinks by 41 shots. It was the margin not the win that was unexpected.
Sam McLean supported by Colin Willcox, Geof McLean and Ross Harman completely eclipsed his opponent Grant Youd to the tune of 25 shots, winning 33-8.
Rodney Horton showed he was happy to be home with a 37-25 win. Horton had good backup in Josh Tyrell, Michael Chilcott and Blair Fidler.
Eden Moore defeated Luke Richardson 25-22 and Tony Sutton held on to defeat Ricky Richardson 21-20.
Latrobe had to pull out all stops to get over Penguin by six shots. Greg Douce had Clinton Steers, Murray Stone and Murray Skirving all playing well and he started his season with a win over Trevor Docking 25-15.
Anothony Johns won comfortably against Chris Dudman and Garry Courtney crept in by two over Wayne Manson.
It was left to Julian Brown, Jacob Brown, Colin Brown and David Osbourne to salvage some pride for the Two Blues when they defeated Phillip Mundy 25-14.
The merged team Devonport Eagles started their season with a win, defeating Wynyard on two rinks and sharing the third.
Tristam Bakes showed the way with an emphatic 31-15 shot win over Groenewege 31-15 and Leon Webb defeated Damien Symes 22-14. Grant Crowe and Michael Higginson played a 28-shot draw. Wynyard’s only outright winner Ian Hering defeated Ian Moore 23-13.
Winners in Division 1 were East Devonport by 17 over Burnie. Ulverstone were too strong for South Burnie defeating them by 24, and Turners Beach finished 14 up on the Devonport Eagles. Penguin and Latrobe played a thriller with Penguin eventually winning 106-99.
In Division 2 Smithton, despite having the home green advantage, failed by seven shots to overcome Port Sorell and South Burnie lowered their colours against Sheffield, going down 90-105. Wynyard finished 16 up on Latrobe and Railton gave the Devonport Eagles a shellacking, defeating them on all rinks by 60 shots.
Division 3 winners were South Burnie over Ulverstone, Wynyard defeated Devonport Eagles, Ridgley easily accounted for Burnie and Penguin defeated Turners Beach.
