Legislative Council President Jim Wilkinson said Tuesday was private members’ time, which does not usually encompass government business.

But the Finfish Farming Industry Reform Bill will be brought before the house on Tuesday if time permits.

The bill seeks to alter the regulatory framework for the finfish farming industry in Tasmania.

If the legislation wins approval in the upper house, finfish farming exclusion zones will be established.

A government spokesman said there was a number of other significant pieces of legislation set to be brought before the upper house.

The controversial bill to facilitate the development of a cable car on Mount Wellington, which has essentially been passed already, will go through its third reading.

Labor, along with all independent MLCs bar one (independent Hobart MLC Rob Valentine) supported the legislation.

A bill to streamline processes and reduce red tape under the Mineral Resources Development Act is also scheduled for debate, as is legislation to change the Local Government Act to improve accountability and transparency in the sector.

The amendments to the Local Government Act passed the lower house last week and include a requirement for councillors to disclose any donations they might have received, just as MHAs and party-aligned MLCs in this state are obliged to do.

The spokesman also said the government intended to move a motion to enable the failed bill to introduce mandatory minimum sentences for child sex offences to be “reconsidered”.
