The wanted person entered the Elwick Hotel on Main Road with their face covered and armed with a gun just before 3am.
They demanded cash before fleeing from the scene.
Glenorchy CIB said the person may have been driving a red or maroon coloured 1995 model Suburu stationwagon with the registration DJ 3639 – the car was stolen from Hill Street in West Hobart overnight.
IN OTHER NEWS:
Detective Inspector Craig Joel said the car was seen at the BP Service Station at Lindisfarne about half-an-hour before the robbery and was eventually found burnt out at Chigwell.
“A man leaving the hotel just before the robbery is also asked to come forward and speak with police,” Detective Inspector Joel said.
“He is not thought to be involved.”
Detective Inspector Joel said the gun used by the offender was “distinctive” with a torch attached to the barrel and a strap clipped to it.
A statement was released by Vantage Group, which operates the Elwick Hotel.
The group’s general manager Martin Kelly said staff at the hotel were assisting police and were being provided with “all the support they need”.
“The offender has barged in through the security door as a patron was leaving the premises,” Mr Kelly said.
“The offender has left the hotel with a small amount of cash. We have provided police with extensive surveillance footage, from inside and outside the venue.”
Anyone with information about the robbery should contact police on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
