The Tasmanian C Squadron, part of the 3rd Light Horse Regiment, took part in that charge, and cleared the hill Tel el Saba, upon which the 4th and 12th regiments mounted their own charge against Beersheba.
A century later in quiet, leafy Longford far from those desert lands, a reenactment group is preparing for their own commemoration of the centenary.
Troop member Terese Binns, who is one of several women kitted out in World War I nurses uniforms, said it was important to remember and honour the men who fought in the Australian Light Horse Regiments and the women who joined the Army Nursing Service.
She said the nurses rode the remount horses through Egypt, many riding sidesaddle but some astride in full skirts.
The troop’s outfits are accurate down to the last detail, incorporating many original pieces, including saddles.
The troop is searching for new members to join them in their efforts to remember and retrace the steps of Tasmanian Light Horse men and women from World War I through to their disbanding in 1943.
On Saturday, October 28, the Northern Tasmanian Light Horse Troop will hold a parade through Launceston’s city centre at 2pm, followed by a 2.30pm commemoration service at the Launceston Cenotaph.
