Having already secured another State of Origin series victory, Smith is a good chance to finish the season with an NRL premiership ring, the Dally M Medal and a World Cup. Given his stellar form, he could even add the Clive Churchill Medal and Golden Boot for the best player in the world.

Never in the 110-year history of rugby league has any player enjoyed such success in one season.

Some have come close. Johnathan Thurston achieved many of those honours in 2015: a premiership, the Churchill Medal, Dally M and a Golden Boot.

However, it was a non-World Cup year, an extra achievement Smith is tipped to tick off as captain of the Kangaroos.

Darren Lockyer had a stellar 2000 season, but the Brisbane legend was part of a rare losing Queensland Origin series en route to premiership, Churchill and World Cup honours.

Smith is, by any definition, one of the game's great winners. Earlier this season he broke Lockyer's mark of 237 wins at premiership level. Smith's tally now stands at 252.

Barely a weekend goes by without him breaking some record. Last weekend it was Lockyer's 355 NRL appearances mark.

Against Brisbane in Friday night's grand final qualifier, he kicked his 1000th goal, becoming the first man in history to do so. He needs to score just one more point to equal Andrew Johns, who sits in second spot on the all-time points-scoring tally. Hazem El Masri's record may not stand for much longer.

"Smith has achieved incredible success at every level of the game," said league historian and stats guru David Middleton of League Information Services.

"With Jonathan Thurston, he appears destined for 'Immortality' - even if he achieves nothing more."

Thurston said the thing that made Smith stand apart from his peers was his ability to find a way to win.

"Whenever I've been in his side at representative level, no matter what the scoreboard is, you never feel you're going to lose," Thurston said.

"It doesn't matter what the clock or the scoreboard says, you know you're going to win with him in your side."

Smith will be 35 next season, but is showing no signs of slowing down. He is contracted to the Storm for another year but has indicated he could go on after that. In doing so, he would become the first player to crack the magical 400 games - a record unlikely to be broken.

"From the conversations I've had with him, he's looking to go around again in 2019," Thurston said.

"He will be the first to reach 400 and I don't think we'll see another.

"His consistency this year makes it one of his best years. He hasn't played a bad game this year and has come up with some big plays to either keep the Storm in the hunt or to extend their lead.

"He's dominating games like I've never seen before."

It is likely Smith will continue to contribute to the game long after he has hung up the boots. The veteran No.9 was the dominant voice in the sheds during the half-time break against the Broncos, to the point where master mentor Craig Bellamy took a back seat.

"I may as well have stayed in the [coaching] box, to be honest," Bellamy said after the match.

"When I came down the man next to me [Smith] had the floor and kept the floor for a few more minutes. After that I'm not quite sure I had to say anything else as what he said was exactly what I was going to say.

"I added a couple of things and a few stats to back him up, but I could have stayed in the box - we were in real good hands."

Smith is unsure whether he will transition into the commentary box, sports administration or coaching when he hangs up the boots, but definitely wants to remain involved in the game.

"I'd love stay close to the ground as far as coaching and being involved with the players," Smith said recently.

"Hopefully I have another 12 to 24 months to work that out."
