Speak Out, an Advocacy Service for people with disabilities, has taken the reins of the Tasmanian Disability Expo to be held on Tuesday, September 26 at the Launceston Tailrace Centre.

Last held two years ago, those who are navigating the National Disability Insurance Scheme, their families and carers, will welcome the chance the see the growing number of service providers all in the one location and get the information they need.

Speak Out advocacy practise leader Julie Butler said that everyone is welcome to come along, grab a cup of tea or coffee and take advantage of the free expo.

“As an advocacy service which helps people with disabilities get the support they need and give them a voice when they might not have a significant person in their lives to do so, we know how confusing finding the right assistance can be,” she said.

“While the NDIS provides the opportunity for people to have a greater say in their lives and in selecting their service providers.

“It’s not easy keeping up with all the organisations who are coming on board and working out what is the best way to go.

“This expo offers the opportunity to talk to key people directly, compare services and learn about the NDIS and the opportunities it can bring.”

Julie also said that the expo would be a great place to go for anyone considering working in the health and disability sector – as there will be organisations all under the one roof who may be looking for more staff or who will have representatives who can talk about job opportunities and training pathways.

“I hope this event will help a lot of people make an informed decision,” she said.

Speak Out is a state-wide advocacy service which aims to develop a respectful and inclusive community for people living with a disability. 

It does this by promoting and defending rights through its advocacy work, good governance that includes people with intellectual disability; and building the capacity of communities.
