Despite the senior side bowing out in last weekend’s preliminary final after a thrilling finals run, the club still has every chance of winning two flags for the season, giving president Paul O’Donoghue plenty to smile about.
“To finish eighth last year and third this year it’s been a really good improvement from the group,” he said.
“And also with the development league side playing in the grand final and the women’s team playing in the grand final... it’s been a really big year for the club.”
Launceston has enjoyed club-wide improvement this season, starting with the Lady Blues’ jump from fourth-placed finishers last season to premiership favourites.
The senior side’s emergence as flag contenders has been mirrored by the development team, which rose from fifth place last year to finish minor premier in 2017.
“There’s no doubt Sam (Lonergan) coming on board full-time made a huge impact on the players, and also the younger guys who played last year probably just improved a little bit as well.
“Some of them had played six, eight or 10 senior games last year and they sort of knew what to expect (this year).
“Individual players like young (Brodie Palfreyman) and Hamish (Leedham) and those guys stepped up and made a big difference to the group.”
