One would have been forgiven for thinking Longford under-18s had little room for improvement in 2017 after dropping just three games on their way to the 2016 NTFA division 1 flag.

But nothing could be further from the truth as the Country Tigers notched up 18 consecutive wins to finish the year undefeated and win a second consecutive flag.
Such was their dominance that only two sides came within seven goals all season.
Coach Roydon Peters, who also took charge of the senior team midway through the season, said he was impressed with his side’s ability to maintain focus in the wake of regular big wins.
“That was probably our biggest challenge but they were all pretty good in that area,” Peters said.
“We worked really hard on the training track and they spent a bit of time off the ground together forming friendships and bonds.
“We were pleased to be able to get the job done on grand final day because there’s a lot of underlying pressure on the boys to go through the season undefeated, but they worked really hard grand final day and got it done which was good.”
The club’s success at youth level comes a promising sign for the senior side.
Peters said about half the under-18s side would return for a shot at a three-peat next season, while the side’s older contingent would take their game to the next level.
“I think there’s 11 of those boys from this year’s premiership side that can play again next year so we’ll retain half of our list again.
“The boys that are too old, most of them have re-signed at the club and are pushing to play senior and reserves footy so that’s the aim.”
