The angler that hooks Timmy the tagged trout at this weekend’s Tasmanian Trout Expo will win $10,000.
Trout Expo president Richard Goss said several hundred trout have been distributed around the 2.5-kilometre creek frontage, with some fish weighing more than five kilograms.
In the event’s 13th year, Mr Goss said a range of prizes would be on offer.
A full-day guided fishing tour worth $700 is on offer for the angler that catches the biggest trout or salmon.
The event will be held on September 23 and 24 at Brumby’s Creek, between weirs two and three, Cressy.
Mr Goss said the expo would be a licence-free weekend in the creek and he expected thousands of people to take advantage of the days.
“People often bring picnics out and camp up by the river somewhere and have a really nice day,” he said.
“It’s really popular in the community.”
With a school event on Monday, Mr Goss expected about 2500 people would attend to drop a line in the water.
He said it was a great way to attract more people – especially youth – to the outdoor activity.
“The people that come along are trying to catch a fish – what we’re trying to do is catch a fisherman,” he said.
Lyons MHA Guy Barnett secured $1000 from the Office of the Premier for the event.
He said it was a way to get young people participating in trout fishing.
“It’s one of our great past-times in Tasmania – we’re very proud of our trout fishery,” he said.
“We want more Tasmanians to participate in trout fishing and this is one way we can show support.”
Mr Goss also shared his tips for hooking trout.
“You have to have your rod in the water – that’s the number one tip,” he said.
“Wherever you’re fishing, it doesn’t matter whether you’re in Tasmania – or Cressy – talk to the locals and get some advice off them.
“If you can’t catch a fish you need to speak with some different locals.”
The event opens from 8am to 4pm, Saturday and Sunday, with tickets $10 for adults and $5 for students.
